Why the Solar Eclipse Will Not Leave People Without Power
  + stars: | 2024-03-27 | by ( Ivan Penn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When the sky darkens during next month’s solar eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. Electric utilities say they expect to see significant decreases in solar power production during the eclipse but have already lined up alternate sources of electricity, including large battery installations and natural gas power plants. Homeowners who rely on rooftop solar panels should also experience no loss of electricity because home batteries or the electric grid will kick in automatically as needed. At 12:10 p.m. on April 8, the solar eclipse will begin over southwestern Texas, the regional electrical system perhaps most affected by the event, and last three hours. “I don’t think anything is as predictable as an eclipse,” said Pedro Pizarro, president and chief of executive of Edison International, a California power company, and the chairman of the Edison Electric Institute, a utility trade organization.

Tesla is a hot favorite when it comes to investing in the electric vehicle market. Brian Arcese, portfolio manager at investment firm Foord Asset Management, said he has a "far less convicted view" in Tesla retaining its dominance than in his preferred investing route in the EV market. He told CNBC Pro Talks last week that he's taken two "slightly untraditional" approaches to investing in that space. He names one U.S. stock, Edison International , as one such U.S. regulated utility company to play the EV trend. But he says that within that space, he's focused on companies that are the lowest-cost producers.

REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Friday sued Southern California Edison, accusing the Edison International (EIX.N) unit of negligence that caused the 2020 Bobcat Fire, which burned close to 180 square miles (466 sq km) in one of the largest wildfires ever in Los Angeles County. It is common for utilities to be sued over wildfire damage, though many lawsuits are filed privately. Climate change turns US utilities grimly exciting

A hotter and stormier world is making life unpleasantly exciting for shareholders, as Hawaiian Electric Industries (HE.N) shows. Yet while European firms have buried power lines underground to avoid damage from storm and fires, American utilities have generally balked. The firm said a second fire began in the same area several hours later, after the utility had turned off local power lines. Separately, Hawaiian Electric Industries, the parent company of Hawaiian Electric, said on Aug. 24 it had suspended its dividend. The company said HEI had withdrawn $170 million and Hawaiian Electric had withdrawn $200 million from their existing revolving unsecured credit facilities to strengthen their balance sheets.

What young investors wantRecent survey data indicates that Cohen isn't alone. And active young investors are willing to give up returns to see that goal through. Nearly a fifth of the Gen Z investors said they would accept returns between 9% and 11.8%, rather than the full 12% average return. The data comes as accountability measures and standards for ESG investing are hotly debated. "What we see with ESG investing is that it creates something that you can signal to other people."

To some people, electric vehicles are a better option because they can serve multiple functions. Another big advantage: The battery in an F-150 Lightning or the electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup, which is expected to go on sale this year, can store a lot more energy than home batteries that are sometimes installed with rooftop solar panels. Pair an electric truck with a home solar system, the thinking goes, and a family could keep the lights on for days or even weeks. The use of electric vehicles as a source of power has intrigued electric utility executives, including Pedro Pizarro, who heads the board of the Edison Electric Institute, the industry’s main trade organization, and is the chief executive of Edison International, which provides power to millions of homes and businesses in Southern California. Mr. Pizarro’s company and other utilities are testing whether it is practical and safe to send power from electric vehicles to the grid.

The third quarter is a key time for extreme weather events. An El Niño weather pattern is widely expected for 2023. "Following three years of La Niña, climate scientists expect 2023 to have El Niño conditions with near-100% certainty given current signals," Karp said in a note to clients last month. Insurers are also among the stocks to typically move in relation to extreme weather events. This year should be a fairly typical one for hurricanes, as El Niño is typically linked to a less severe season.

The transition to clean energy won't be equal across sectors, according to Morgan Stanley Research. The Wall Street bank broke down segments of the energy transition that will benefit and others that will be challenged by the transition to clean energy. For this list, CNBC picked stocks Morgan Stanley thinks stand to benefit from the move toward clean energy, with a special focus on shares with overweight and equal weight ratings. The stocks in this list fall into one of four categories: — Energy storage and fuel cells. "Not all incumbent utilities will gain from the energy transition," Byrd wrote Wednesday.

Meanwhile, BlackRock is part of another group investing $650 million to build chargers along freight routes. Because port real estate is at a premium, most early drayage charging projects will be "behind the fence" on trucking company property, experts said. Electric trucks cannot operate without chargers, but it does not make sense to build chargers if drivers are not using electric trucks. Prologis, the biggest U.S. warehouse owner, created its mobility business to install electric truck chargers and solar panels. "A marriage between real estate and energy infrastructure" will be needed to accelerate the transition to electric-powered trucking, Prologis Mobility's Holland said.
The stock market in March is looking grim, but certain "fortress" stocks can allow investors to play defense and beat the market. With this in mind, CNBC screened for fortress stocks that can withstand and outperform the market. However, while shares have gained more than 9% in 2023, the stock has tumbled 15% over the past 12 months. Edison has also shown steady growth, with shares up 7% over the past 12 months. Shares have rallied more than 6% in 2023, but they are down almost 11% over the past 12 months.
Live Nation — The ticker seller fell 9%, despite reporting fourth-quarter revenue of $4.29 billion, up about 60% year over year and topping StreetAccount's estimate of $3.6 billion. EOG Resources — The energy company dropped 5.1% after reporting fourth-quarter earnings, excluding items, that were short of analysts' expectations, according to StreetAccount. Etsy — Etsy slipped 4.8%, a day after gaining more than 2% on its fourth-quarter earnings beat. The company also offered cautious guidance for its first quarter, anticipating $2.95 billion to $3.15 billion in gross merchandise revenue. However, Autodesk beat fourth-quarter expectations on the top and bottom lines, according to Refinitiv.
The coming week is also the busiest of the corporate earnings season, with about a third of the S & P 500 companies releasing results. "Historically, the market waits for the last Fed rate hike to be introduced and then the market climbs higher. The S & P 500 was up more than 8.8% for the month. The Dow was up 5.7% on the week, the S & P 500 was up 5.7% and the Nasdaq was up 2.2%. The 50-day moving average is 3,841 for the S & P 500, and it was well above it Friday afternoon for the second time in the past week.
